Customer-Centered Clinical Workflow Platforms
Overview
CaseTrakker was a configurable healthcare workflow platform supporting Care Management, Utilization Management, Disease Management, and other clinical programs across multiple health plans. Unlike traditional software implementations, every customer required unique workflow configuration, reporting, and operational processes to support the way their clinical teams actually worked.
Those early implementation experiences became the foundation of my product philosophy. Rather than starting with technology, I learned to begin with empathy—understanding the people using the product, the challenges they faced each day, and how technology could remove friction from their work.
My Role
I partnered directly with nurses, care managers, operational leaders, and healthcare organizations throughout the entire implementation lifecycle—including discovery, workflow analysis, product configuration, reporting, testing, training, deployment, and post-production support.
Every implementation required understanding how each organization delivered care. Rather than asking customers to change their workflows to match the software, we worked to configure the platform around the realities of clinical practice. Those experiences taught me that successful products are built by listening first and designing second.
The Opportunity
Every health plan approached care management differently. Clinical workflows, operational priorities, reporting requirements, and user expectations varied from customer to customer.
Success depended on understanding those differences—not simply installing software. Each implementation required balancing configurable product capabilities with real-world clinical operations while ensuring the technology supported the people responsible for delivering care.
Connecting Strategy to Execution
Looking back, this experience introduced me to product thinking long before I knew the term.
Customer workshops, workflow discovery, product configuration, reporting design, and user training all centered around a simple principle: understand the people first. By approaching every implementation with empathy for end users, we were able to build solutions that reflected how healthcare professionals actually worked rather than forcing them to adapt to technology.
Results
Over five years, I completed eight end-to-end healthcare platform implementations while supporting numerous additional client engagements. More importantly, those experiences established the product philosophy that continues to guide my work today.
The most valuable healthcare products begin with empathy—understanding the people, workflows, and real-world challenges technology is meant to support before designing the solution.
