One of the biggest misconceptions in product development is that the best technology wins.
In healthcare, it often doesn't.
I've watched technically impressive solutions struggle to gain adoption while comparatively simple capabilities became indispensable. The difference usually wasn't the sophistication of the technology—it was how naturally it fit into the way people already worked. Healthcare professionals rarely think about technology in terms of individual products. They experience it as part of a much larger workflow. Every additional login, browser tab, copy-and-paste action, or application switch introduces just enough friction to interrupt clinical thinking and slow the work that matters most.
Artificial intelligence is simply the latest example of this challenge.
Much of the conversation surrounding AI focuses on the quality of the model itself. Which large language model performs best? Which vendor has the most advanced capabilities? Which product generates the most accurate summary?
Those questions matter.
But they're not the questions that ultimately determine whether a product succeeds.
A remarkable AI model that requires clinicians to leave their electronic health record, manually enter information, and then transfer the results back into their workflow will often create more work than it removes. Meanwhile, a slightly less sophisticated solution that quietly surfaces the right information inside the tools clinicians already use may become part of everyday practice.
The difference isn't intelligence.
It's integration.
That shift represents one of the most significant changes happening in healthcare technology today. Organizations are moving away from standalone AI applications and toward solutions that embed intelligence directly into existing workflows. Ambient documentation, AI-assisted chart review, clinical decision support, and automated document processing all succeed for the same reason: they make existing work easier rather than asking people to work differently.
While many of today's examples focus on physicians and electronic health records, I believe the same principle applies across the healthcare ecosystem. Health plan clinicians and operational teams face many of the same challenges. A utilization management nurse reviewing a prior authorization shouldn't have to leave their workflow to summarize hundreds of pages of medical records or search multiple systems for supporting clinical information. A case manager coordinating care shouldn't need to open separate AI tools to identify potential care gaps, summarize recent member interactions, or locate relevant community resources. The most valuable AI solutions won't create another destination—they'll quietly surface the right information within the systems these teams already rely on every day.
Similarly, healthcare analysts and operational leaders spend significant time gathering information before they can begin solving the actual problem. AI has tremendous potential to organize complex reporting, highlight meaningful trends, and surface anomalies that deserve attention. But its greatest value isn't producing another dashboard or report. It's helping people spend less time finding information and more time applying their expertise to improve member outcomes, operational performance, and business decisions.
I think that's an important lesson for product leaders, regardless of the technology involved.
Sometimes we mistake visibility for value. We assume successful products are the ones users interact with the most. In reality, the opposite is often true.
The most valuable products I've worked on weren't the ones demanding constant attention. They quietly removed unnecessary work. They reduced the time people spent searching for information, navigating systems, or repeating the same tasks over and over again. As a result, clinicians could spend more time with members, analysts could focus on interpreting data instead of finding it, and operational leaders could make decisions with greater confidence.
Of course, making AI invisible doesn't mean making it unquestioned.
Healthcare decisions still require human judgment, and thoughtful product design becomes even more important as AI becomes more deeply embedded into clinical workflows. Transparency, appropriate review, and meaningful human oversight are essential—not because we distrust the technology, but because healthcare is built on accountability, context, and professional expertise.
The products that create lasting value are rarely the ones people talk about the most.
They're the ones people gradually stop noticing because they've become such a natural part of how they work.
The best healthcare technology doesn't compete for attention. It quietly supports the people who need it, allowing them to focus on what matters most: caring for patients and improving lives.
