Overview

Building Healthy Families transformed Elevance Health's maternity program by expanding beyond traditional pregnancy support into a more comprehensive women's and family health experience spanning family planning, pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenting. Replacing the existing Future Moms program, the initiative introduced a digital-first model, broader member support, and a more connected experience while preserving continuity for existing members.

Successfully delivering the program required more than launching a new clinical offering. It required translating the expanded program vision into operational workflows, digital experiences, reporting capabilities, incentive tracking, and technology solutions that could support it at enterprise scale.

Representing an approximately $5 million enterprise investment and designed to replace a legacy maternity program across more than 17 million commercial lives, Building Healthy Families was a significant enterprise transformation rather than a conventional program enhancement.

My Role

The Clinical Maternity Management organization established the vision for Building Healthy Families and defined the expanded member experience. My role was to help translate that vision into coordinated operational, reporting, and technology capabilities while ensuring workflows, reporting, digital experiences, and incentive tracking supported the intended clinical outcomes.

Working alongside clinical operations, business, product, engineering, implementation, and reporting teams, I helped coordinate the migration from Future Moms to Building Healthy Families, supported system configuration within a new medical management platform, contributed to the new digital member experience, and ensured reporting accurately reflected the expanded program, member milestones, and family health journey.

The Opportunity

Replacing an established clinical program required much more than implementing new technology. Existing member data, clinical workflows, assessments, incentive milestones, and reporting all needed to transition seamlessly while introducing entirely new program capabilities.

A significant component of the initiative involved designing reporting and operational processes to support incentive-based engagement. Member milestones needed to be consistently captured throughout the family journey to ensure participants received the appropriate rewards while giving clients visibility into program participation and outcomes.

Connecting Strategy to Execution

One of the most valuable aspects of the initiative was understanding how every operational and technical decision influenced the overall member experience.

The clinical team focused on designing a more comprehensive women's and family health program. My responsibility was ensuring that technology, reporting, workflow configuration, data migration, and digital capabilities worked together to support that vision without disrupting existing clinical operations or member engagement.

Maintaining that enterprise perspective helped align business objectives, technology implementation, and reporting into a cohesive solution that supported both clinical teams and the members they served.

Results

Building Healthy Families successfully replaced Future Moms while expanding the organization's ability to support members across a broader women's and family health journey through enhanced digital experiences, operational capabilities, incentive-based engagement, and integrated reporting.

The initiative reinforced an important lesson that continues to influence my approach to digital health products:

Successful digital health products are created by designing technology around the member experience, ensuring clinical objectives, operational workflows, and data work together to improve meaningful health outcomes.
